CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE party turned out to be not nearly half as bad as she’d thought it would be. But then a lot of the reason for that was Aiden, and how he stuck to her like glue for the evening. He would communicate with a touch of his hand, a squeeze of her fingers, or just by a smile or a twitch of his eyebrows. They hardly even needed words.

And that was pretty amazing in itself. They’d come such a long way in a few days.

Even the presence of the two camera crews in the room was soon forgotten beneath a little layering of food and alcohol. And Caitlin found herself relaxing for the first time since Aiden had knocked on her front door.

He leaned down to whisper in her ear before moving off to get them drinks from the buffet table. And that was when Izzy found her.

‘I think you have a lot of explaining to do, young lady.’

Caitlin’s heart caught at the softly spoken words. ‘Yes, I guess I do. You probably hate me about now.’

‘I should do.’

Caitlin smiled hopefully. ‘And do you?’

Izzy studied her with a serious expression before cracking a smile. ‘When you have that hunk of stuff on your arm and you look this happy?’

Caitlin breathed a sigh of relief and wrapped her arm around her friend’s waist. ‘Thanks.’

‘And you do know you two are disgustingly happy, right?’

It was certainly the impression they were aiming for…

‘He’s pretty amazing when you get to know him.’

Izzy gave her a sidelong glance. ‘And maybe now that I know about him I’ll get the chance.’

Caitlin grimaced. ‘I deserved that. I would have told you…’

‘Mmm. Some time before I fixed you up on that date with Simon would have been good. You have to have already been talking to Aiden by then.’

In theory she would have been. ‘It was early days then.’

‘Any bit of a wonder you blew him off when you had that waiting in the wings?’

Avoiding her friend’s perceptive eyes, Caitlin glanced across at Aiden on the other side of the room. It was funny how she was missing his presence by her side already.

A tall, fair-haired man appeared by him and they greeted each other with a manly hug. She smiled.

‘So, what do I have to do to get you to forgive me on this, then?’

Izzy’s face was glowing when she looked back at her. ‘Well, you could start by introducing me to that gorgeous guy your fiancé is talking to.’

Caitlin nodded. ‘Done.’

They started to move across the crowded living room. Then Izzy leaned her head down. ‘And yes, by the way. I’d love to be your bridesmaid.’

‘Who said I was going to ask?’

‘Oh, you were. But, just so you know, I’m not wearing—’

‘Frills. Yeah, I got that.’

Aiden glanced up as they approached and immediately smiled at Caitlin. Lifting one arm from his side, he invited her against his body. ‘Hey.’

‘Hey.’ She smiled back at him. ‘I brought my best friend to meet you. This is Izzy. Izzy, this is Aiden.
